Evagrios' gnostics are not modern scientists. To live the ascetic life in a ‘more gnostic way’ is said to infuriate the demons.49 The knowledge is used for the purpose of discernment, the active fight against the passions.50 And the goal of the entire ascetic project is for Evagrios to be granted contemplation of the Holy Trinity, a state he describes as knowledge.
