red flags for abdo pain in HPI
○ Wt loss (A, G) -> GI malignancy
○ Pain radiating to back (A, G) -> pancreatitis, AAA
○ Pain central, then RLQ (any) -> appendicitis
○ Pain radiating to groin (M) -> testicular torsion, hernia, renal colic
○ Blood per rectum/melena (any) -> GI bleed (PUD, varices, diverticulitis), meckel’s (congenital diverticulum), malignancy in elderly
○ Current abx/steroids (any) -> can mask peritoneal sx’s
○ New onset of pain, change in pain or altered bowel habits (G)
○ Pain waking pt at night
