3rd stage of labour
#obgyn
3rd stage of normal labour:
- from birth of baby to delivery of placenta (usually 30 min)
- separation implied by fresh gush of blood & lengthening of umbilical cord at introitus, with change in shape (to firm & globular) and position (rises upward) of uterine fundus
- controlled cord traction once fundus is firm, combined with oxytocic agent administration
- tugging on cord w/ soft uterus may lead to uterine inversion & post-partum hemorrhage
