I will return shortly to some of the comparisons to be discerned between Breton’s Paul and the late Althusser. But, for the moment I want to repeat very directly that it is a materialism of the encounter itself which, on its own terms, cannot allow either “religion” or Paulinism to remain unscathed or self-enclosed as the idealism they might even think themselves to be.
