Approach to the febrile infant 29-90 days
>>Low risk criteria - just observe w/o abx (outpt) - If clinical deterioration occurs: admit; FSWU; empiric antibiotics
- Previously healthy term infant
- Non-toxic clinical appearance
- No focal infection (except otitis media)
- Peripheral leukocyte count 5.0 – 15.0 x109/L (normal CBC)
- Absolute band count ≤ 1.5 x109/L
- Urine: ≤ 10 WBC per high field (x40)
- Stool (if diarrhea): ≤ 5 WBC per high field (x40)
>>high risk - Admit to hospital - FSWU + IV abx
