The view once widely held that Mu- J:iammad and Islam discouraged poetry and the poets is now gene- rally discredited. The famous Koranic condemnation of poets in Sura XXVI obviously related to a particular type of poetry that cele- brated tribal and partisan virtues which ran counter to the universal Islamic ideal.
