The Abbasid patron did not choose a poet for his political or religious leaning, which the poet usually concealed when disadvantageous. Although it was not a prerequisite, an ethnic or religious affiliation between a poet and his patron could enhance their relationship. Ultimately, however, the poet owed his patron loyalty against his own personal preferences. 29
