During starvation: Elevated levels of glucagon and low levels of insulin, such as occur during fasting (see p. 327), decrease the intracellular concentration of hepatic fructose 2,6-bisphos- phate. This results in a decrease in the overall rate of glycolysis and an increase in gluconeogenesis.
