The major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, GABA is associated with anxiety (decreased levels) Huntington disease (decreased levels), and epilepsy (decreased lev- els). Anxiolytics (eg, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates) are agonists of the GABA A receptor (see sections on anxiolytics and hypnotics for further explanation of benzodiazepines and barbiturates)
