世界遺産は毎年その件数が増えていく中で、上限に関する議論なども見られ始める（後述）。その一方で、登録物件から「顕著な普遍的価値」が失われた場合などには、その物件は世界遺産リストから抹消される規定が存在していたが[45]、その様な事例は長らく存在していなかった。しかし、2007年の第31回世界遺産委員会でアラビアオリックスの保護区が初めて抹消され、続いて2009年の第33回世界遺産委員会ではドレスデン・エルベ渓谷が抹消された。松浦晃一郎は、最初の抹消事例が出た2007年以降を、保全や保護に対する重要性が一層増した時期と見なしている[46]。
