^^ scripts (usually bash) to do some initial installations of packages and things like that, to configure the instance on start (i.e. what ansible normally does but a simplified version).
^^^ you can see this script from within the instance by issuing the following command at the shell: sudo curl http://169.254.169.254/latest/user-data
