It is not claimed, therefore, that there is no philosophical problem of the relation of physical science to the things of ordinary experience. It is asserted that the problem in the -form in which it has chiefly occupied modern philosophy is an artifi- cial one, due to the continued assumption of premises formed in an earlier period of history and now having no relevancy to the state of physical inquiry. Clearing the ground of this unreal problem, however, only imposes upon philosophy the consid- eration of aproblem which is urgently practical, growing out of the conditions of contemporary life.
